Arabic Coffee Hour: Learning a New Culture
Students, faculty, and staff were invited out to learn about the Arabic culture, make new friends, and enjoy coffee during Arabic Coffee Hour on Wednesday.
This is the first semester that the Arabic Club has taken full control of Arabic Coffee hour, and according to Arabic Club President Katie Elmadawy, she decided that she wanted to take the load off of Teacher Assistants and the Professors.
“It’s just been a thing ever since I first started Arabic a year and a half ago,” Arabic Club member Angel Perry said.
“Pretty much to bring people out and help them learn more about the Arabic culture and strike down those stereotypes that people have.”
Every week there the Arabic club finds a new topic to discuss, and this week the attendees learned about the Arabic Government and how their judicial system works.
After the information session, guests were asked to pull out their phones and take part in a game that reviewed material that was just taught during Coffee Hour.
“I’m interested in foreign cultures, and I want to do some traveling, especially North Africa, so I feel like it would be good to learn a little vocabulary, but more importantly something about the culture,” Biology Major Jim Neal said.
Neal, who has not been to every session, says that based off of the few he has attended, learning about the Arabic government was his favorite.
Arabic Coffee Hour is held every Wednesday from 4 pm to 5 pm in Forest Drive Building in room 1310.
